L.A. Bridge Improvement Program Seeks Artists

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

The Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs is looking for as many as 30 artists to participate in the Bureau of Engineering’s Bridge Improvements Program, which will renovate or restore several vehicle, railroad, bicycle and grade separation bridges in and around Downtown Los Angeles.

  • Across the city, more than 80 bridges require seismic improvement or total replacement, and the department is looking to assemble a pool of artists to dress up the bridges’ concrete railings, lighting and sidewalks, among other elements.
  • Individual design budgets are expected to cost from $4,000 to $10,000 and, in some cases, artists may be contracted to fabricate and install their designs.
  • Since many of the bridges span the Los Angeles River, artists interested in the waterway’s revitalization are particularly encouraged to apply.

More information is available on the Culture L.A. website or by calling Becky Snodgrass at (213) 202-5544.

RANDOM RAB (El Circo)
Emerging from the West Coast electronic music scene, Random Rab will catalyze your journey towards a haunting ecstasy. Playing only his own originally produced music live with an array of drum machines, samplers, sequencers, and instruments, the beats are smooth, bold, and overwhelming … Rab’s original vocals, melodies and hitting basslines merge seamlessly into a tapestry of unique and unexpectedly haunting sounds.

BREAKBEATBUDDHA (Ovatone)
BreakBeatBuddha has been shakin’ dance floors on numerous continents for 15 years now. His DJ sets are a blend of Hip Hop, Break Beat and Drum n’ Bass, to which he adds live conscious lyricism that challenges the dance floor and politicizes the party. Originally from the UK, he brings his knowledge of the “Bad Brit Bass” to ruff things up on the West Coast. Both DJ and producer, he’s responsible for numerous dance floor killers such as “Buddha Bounce” (Organic Music) and “Dat Feelin” (OVATONE music).

DAVID STARFIRE (Space Island)
David Starfire is a passionate producer/composer/multi instrumentalist/DJ residing in Los Angeles via San Francisco. A producer of varying styles from dance to rock to hip-hop to bhangra and everything in between, his production standards are compared to the best and DJs like Adam Freeland and Karsh Kale are spinning out his original songs and remixes. His DJ sets have been rumored to cause earthquakes in California with his sonic bass frequencies and he consistently takes the music to the next level.

JUPITER (TheDoLab/Space Island)
Jupiter often referred to as the utility guy of LA’s underground sound scene, has come a long way since venturing out to his first experience of warehouse enlightenment and connection nearly 8 years ago. His beat matching and wealth of skills are exemplified from years of experience in the studio and in live music production. He has accumulated and cross-referenced them with an insane range of musical influences ranging from psy, tech, trance and break elements. Jupiter has been a long-standing part of LA’s underground music scene, dropping jaws and shaking asses all over Southern California from Space Island to Coachella.

BRIAN SEED (Moon Tribe)
Brian Seed (aka Brian Golub- Label Manager/A&R/ Artist) has built an international following spinning hard trance, tribal breaks, and progressive techno. In 2002 Brian formed Ritual Sounds with business partner Richard Butler. You can expect more releases on Ritual Sounds from Brian in the future, as well as releases with Phonetik, Ball of Waxx, Fade, and others.

MANNY(DJ Dojo/Austin, TX.)
Manny owns & operates “The DJ DOJO”, which is the only store in Austin, Texas. He has been spinning wicked beats for over 10 years and, in that time, has opened and played with the likes of: Numark (Jurassic 5), DJ Spooky, Fort Knox 5, Ursula 1000, Bassnectar and Thievery Corporation. He now produces under the name Dubwise International and will be bringin’ a slew of bumpin’, chunky mashups and breakbeats to the Island.

AZMYTH (Manifest Station)
Azmyth has spent six years in the mix, pushing his skill evolution through everything from Trance to Hip Hop, before settling deep into the sound of Broken Beats. His current sets include Dub & 2-step, Funk, Electro, Progressive & Glitch Hop sounds. Azmyth specializes in themed events, so get ready for a Hallow-riffic treat at Space Island as this mad scientist releases his new formula to the masses.

DANDELION (Space Island)
Dandelion was conceived for the sole purpose of taking audiences on musical journeys by spinning beautiful soundscapes and nasty wicked beats. He is blessed with the natural gift of rhythm. Dandelion began DJ’ng after being inspired by the spirit of the Burning Man and his passion for breaks. He has played his sets to a worldwide audience (Bombay, Chennai, Goa), and has been holding down the tables at his residency, Space Island, since 2004.

BITCHES ON THE SWITCHES (RobnSteel/H2O Productions)
B.O.T.S (Bitches On The Switches) three smoking hot and funky girls hailing from Boston, Florida, and San Diego. Djs Eva, Amyx and Alikat fuse a spectrum of break beat styles maintaining a bass-heavy funk and sexy, booty-shakin’ bump. This beat sythisization that is original to dynamic Tag Team Trio, B.O.T.S. have played at Avalon, WMC Miami, Burning Man, Madrid, Spain, Boston, New York, up & down California, broadcast on radio stations as far as the Netherlands and currently hold residencies at Blowfish Sushi and The Room in Hollywood.

L.A. Burning Man Decompression, Vol. 4

Saturday, October 14th, 2006

So…. when has the threat of rain ever kept you from living a rich, full, extreme life? Bring it on! Wet or dry, I wouldn’t miss the L.A. Decom for anything! Well, maybe if lovely “Miss Burning Man” and her naughty little helpers made some delicious carnal promises that they intended to follow thru on, I might consider missing the event… but that ain’t gonna happen. Bone dry or dripping sky, this is going to be amazing!

Los Angeles Burning Man Decompression 2006

Saturday, Oct 14th
Noon to midnight

$10 in Playa outfits (that means costume), $20 without

Enter at 1st Street and Vignes in “lovely” downtown L.A.

mapquest 901 e. 1st street, la, ca 90012

www.la-burningman.com

WELCOME HOME! The thrill of the playa rises again, this time on the streets of Los Angeles. This is an annual event to bring the spirit of Burning Man alive in our community.

Curious about Burning Man? Then this is the perfect way to get a taste of radical self expression, without having to drive 12 hours.

THIS IS AN ART FESTIVAL FEATURING:
THEME CAMPS
ART CARS
FIRE SCULPTURES
ART INSTALLATIONS
PAINTINGS
PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITS

7 STAGES PRESENTING:
VISUAL PERFORMERS
SPOKEN WORD POETRY
FIRE TROUPES
LIVE BANDS
DJ’S
PERFORMANCE ART
AERIALISTS
VJ’S

THIS IS A FAMILY FRIENDLY EVENT.

THIS YEAR WE WILL HAVE SEVERAL FOOD OPTIONS, INCLUDING VEGETARIAN AND NON VEGETARIAN MEALS FROM MULTIPLE BURNER FRIENDLY VENDORS.

WE NEED YOU! So bring your good energy, costumes, art, music, and performances to the streets of downtown LA. Help us spread the word far and wide, feel free to forward this email to all your lists. Invite your friends that have never been to burning man. Stop telling them about the magic- instead show them the magic!

This year we are adding an extra block to the festival, so we have room for all the new theme camps, artists and art cars. We will be lowering the noise level of sound stages by doing 4 corner sound. We will have far more performer space this year, for diverse acts such as break dancers, stilt shows, fire troupes, and belly dancers.

We will be hosting a “green area” - a place where those interested in sustainability, permaculture and environmentalism will be able to see first hand new technology and listen to speakers in this earth friendly movement.

We will have more food and beverage vendors this year, so you can come early and stay all day.
We’ll make sure there will be food for all tastes - organic to carnivore.

Expect incredible art work, beautiful art cars, and delightful music - with as much diversity as burners can provide.

Decompression is an opportunity to dust off and share again playa art, performances, theme camps, photos, videos and stories from the playa; to re-connect with family and friends; and collaborate to create new art. It is, at its simplest, a reunion. But more significantly, it is a thoroughly participatory celebration of Burning Man art and community within our larger communities. And it is one of the more powerful ways many of us bring some of what is so inspiring about Burning Man to our cities and the public eye.

The street fair is also a fund raiser for the Black Rock Arts Foundation (BRAF) whose mission is to support and promote community-based interactive art through grants and exhibitions.

This year marks the 4th year for the street fair in Los Angeles and expects 5,000+ patrons joining costumed artists and participants with multiple stages, performances, theme camps and art installations.

Added to this year’s event will be an art gallery exhibit: “Burning Man, Awakening Inspiration” that will preview at the Gallery Row Art Walk Oct 12th.

For parking, may we suggest several options:

Artist Pepe Ozan Film Festival Screening

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Pepe Ozan is visiting Hollywood this weekend where he will be screening his documentary movie about the nomadic gypsies of India. Pepe and partner Melitta lived amongst five gypsy families for almost one year and traveled with them all over the Indian continent, documenting their extraordinary lives in order to make this exceptional film.

Perhaps best known for his amazing art works at Burning Man, where he is one of the longest lasting artists to grace the Playa (beginning in 1991), then creating the Burning Man Opera in 1996, of which Twan served as co-producer (1998-2002), and finally moving into other directions artistically, which is how he began making documentaries in and about some interesting facets of eastern Indian life.

The screening will begin at 2:00 in the afternoon. A great way to spend a bit of time!

Jaisalmer Ayo! has been invited to screen at the National Geographic Film Festival which is taking place at the beautiful Egyptian Theatre which is located at:

6712 Hollywood Boulevard,
between Las Palmas and McCadden,
just east of Highland Avenue
in Hollywood.
Selma Avenue is just south of the theatre.

Please consider stopping by and sharing some love with Pepe. He’d be delighted to meet you and he’s a joy to know. And the movie is well worth watching, particularly if you have an interest in all things eastern Indian.

Here are a few photos of Pepe’s Playa creations:
