5th Annual L.A. Burning Man Decompression

Saturday, October 13th, 2007

My friends,

I’ve been doing a bit of traveling lately… seeing bits and pieces of this blue/green planet of ours in all its glory…. hence my sparse posting over the past couple of months… I know, I know, that’s no excuse. Therefore I’ve been hunting high and low for some kind of system that can be put into place to ensure that this list can continue with its free-flow of information, regardless of where I personally might be, or how much time I may or may not have on my hands… more on that later. I may need your help. Yeah, for sure, I’ll need your help…

It was this traveling that kept me away from the Playa this year. After 10 consecutive years at Burning Man, and always either being involved with a huge art project such as the Burning Man Opera, or just being the L.A. regional director (as I had been from 1999 - 2006), this year, being without a major Playa project for the first time ever, I caught the travel bug… I’ll post more on that later, as well. In the meantime, enjoy this little image of me enjoying myself on September 1st, the day the Man Burned. I was half a world away:

Twan in Primosten, Croatia instead of Burning Man

Additionally, it is this travel bug that will be keeping me away from yet another fantastic function, as today Saturday October 13th is the day for the

5th Annual L.A. Burning Man Decompression!

It was in 2003 that this exceptional festival was born. I’m proud to say that I was the L.A. Regional director that made it so. No, I can’t and won’t take credit for the creation of the event, as the team that came together had been an exceptional group of proactive super-cool something-or-others with whom I’d been hanging with for some time. For the most part, it is this team that continue to put the event together. The work is hard and for the most part, thankless… but it must be done… and so it is…

And when you and the rest of the community show up… well, as you know, that’s where the magic is. The juice. Alchemy. You know!

Now, without further ado, Ladies and gentlemen… freaks and misfits, spectators and participants…

Los Angeles Burning Man Decom Sreet Faire!

Says Marsi, (one of L.A.’s Regional directors):

Howdy LA…

Long time no speak, eh? We have been busy busy planning decompression and boy do we have treats for you! I have full info on Decompression, which is this Saturday October 13 listed below plus some special volunteer requests on top, and all other postings to the list below.

Hope to see you Saturday.

Smoooch,

Marsi

SPECIAL VOLUNTEER REQUESTS:

  • EMT’s - Are you an EMT or MEDIC? If so, we would LOVE to have you join forces with our EMT team so that the folks we do have get some play time. If this describes you, please email laburners@gmail.com.

Then we need 12+ people to help with tear down on Sunday morning after Decom. Everyone will get free passes into the event and get to work on on of the coolest piece of art on the playa and at Decom.

Kung Fu Sabre Classes for Fire Performers w/ Firegroove

Beginning October 6, 2007

Kung Fu Fire Sabre: Beginning and Intermediate

Instructor: Anna Maltese

This fun and intense intro-level class is designed for fire performers of all levels and offers a comprehensive education in the basics of Kung Fu Sabre (broadsword), with special emphasis on training in stances, poise, and flow. The class also covers the origins and history; it’s techniques, aspects, and parts; as well as proper handling and sword etiquette. The 1 1/2 - hour classes begin with a half-hour warm-up period of chi kung for training in proper breathing, stretching and meditation techniques in order to cultivate the strength, flexibility and proper mindset necessary for learning the martial arts.

The 7 - week course will move through basic stances and movement drills to more complex techniques of striking and parrying. The course will also cover fire sabre safety, including proper methods of dipping, lighting, and extinguishing. At the end of the course students will have learned and be able to perform a basic fire sabre set, and will have the opportunity to purchase their own fire sabre at a discounted price.

Kung fu is the mother of all other martial arts. Beautiful and flowing, yet kinetic and powerful, it is a truly exhilarating art form upon which to build a skill set in fire performance.

Art Exhibit: Linda Graveline’s “No Diving”

Friday, August 10th, 2007

Graveline’s work exposes and acknowledges the beauty hidden in our seemingly mundane daily experiences. It reveals the depth and illusions created by reflections, shadows and movement. Her intention is to inspire people to look outside their probable reality, instigate smiles and escort the viewer into a heightened state of consciousness and possibility.

NO DIVING was her first endeavor as an artist. While daydreaming about a house she’d like to build, she thought it should include a hologram of a swimming pool on the living room floor. The idea evolved into a video installation, which has been shown by LACMA, Bank Gallery and the L.A. Art Show. She has since produced video, photography, light installations and a billboard in New York city.

Mike Watt Interviews Charles Bukowski’s Widow

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

Plus, the DIY “Blues for Bukowski” music video

Being a friend as well as a huge long-time fan of Mike Watt and his various musical adventures, I thought I’d share a couple of cool Mike Watt offerings:

Hey Folks,

You can hear me work the thudstick w/ Steve Hodges on drums for violinist Chris Murphy’s “Blues for Bukowski” and yep, that’s a fuzz bass solo I did in the middle of it (Chris’ idea!)

watt

Plus, the Linda Bukowski interview. A must read for any true fan of Charles Bukowski:

(The image below) will bring you to a spiel I did last year w/ mister Bukowski’s wife Linda here in my (San) Pedro town.

Death of a Sculpture?

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

Art Before Commerce:
Sculpture in Illinois to be Replaced…

…by a pharmacy

Spindle by Dustin Shuler

Well, so much for culture…

A well-known and much admired large-scale sculpture will be dismantled to make way for a pharmacy.

The landmark art piece, officially named “Spindle”, is a towering sculpture of eight cars impaled by a giant steel nail. It became famous for its appearance in the 1992 comedy film “Wayne’s World”, starring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey. The sculpture is also known as the Car Kabob and the Eight Car Pileup.

To this day, Spindle attracts movie fans to the shopping center parking lot which has been its home, located in Berwyn, Illinois, a suburb west of Chicago.

Said Mayor Michael O’Connor:

From a marketing standpoint, I like the Spindle. It has definitely been a plus for the community.

Berwyn Mayor Michael O’Connor

Regardless, the edgy sculpture will be removed this summer to make way for a Walgreen’s pharmacy. It could be moved elsewhere, though the cost of doing so would be high. Seems as though the “plus for the community” didn’t carry much weight in the face of big business. When compared to a pharmacy (which can be found on any street corner) the plus became a minus.

Said the artist who built the piece in 1989:

Personally, I would have moved the Walgreen’s and left the Spindle where it is. The dismantling (of my art work) is painful and is a loss for Chicago.

California artist Dustin Shuler

I couldn’t have said it better. What a shame.

Harmony Festival

The 29th Annual

HARMONY FESTIVAL

Northern California’s Premier Music, Camping
& Sustainable Lifestyle Festival

“Promoting Global Cooling”

Harmony Festival 2007

If you have never journeyed up to Harmony Festival I can’t recommend it enough… it’s a smaller and more user friendly “family” affair and it’s like the first Norcal festival of the season that kicks off the summer up there. You will find producers of Burning Man, Earthdance, High Sierra, Oregon Country Fair, Joshua Tree Music Fest, Anon Salon, Reggae on the River all there and lending our support (snafu with PreCompression having to move to same weekend but… maybe do both?)

From the southlands; the Mutaytor, Lucent Dossier, David Starfire and others have all performed in the past or are performing this year. Check the lineup below and read through the cracks (…people like New Orleans Social Club are members of The Meters and Neville Bros). The Sat night Techno Tribal party features STS9, Shpongle and Rabbit in the Moon performing among others and Anon Salon also hosts the “Ambiotca” party just across the way as well. On site camping is now available… Wow and Otter Oasis camps from BM have large presence there.

’Nuff said on the sales pitch… just come up… you WILL have a great time …. and/or meet the love of your life… Harmony Festival is just that way. Hope to see ya,

Love and Stratocasters,

Mark Bava

TECHNO-TRIBAL COMMUNITY DANCE

SATURDAY - JUNE 9th 2007
Grace Pavilion - 8:00PM - 2:00AM - All Ages

Once a year there comes a sensorium extravaganza like no other… The fabulous Techno-Tribal Dance takes flight in a universe of 21st Century sound and light in the vast cathedral of Grace Pavilion. A sea of costumed, dancing people celebrate the moment to the music of top electronica artists, their eyes filled with jewels by a full spectrum laser array and vast airy beings that hang in space, painted with light and sailing in the sound field. Fire spinners dazzle the eye as daring aerialists soar through the dark reaches above the pulsing crowd, whose bones are vibrating with massive bass beats. Then fantasy forms and dream beings on stilts cut a path through the happy dancers, bringing with them an element of - what? Ritual? Magic? Birth of something so novel we cannot name it, but we know we want it and it’s here!
