Since 2000, the Temple has been a place for catharsis, remembrance, and rebirth, offering Burning Man participants a physical reminder to embrace change.

Drawing its inspiration from canyons carved over time by wind and water, the Temple of Flux rises from the desert floor as a series of graceful double-curved walls. Their wide, heavy bases taper as they ascend, leading the eye from a solid urban foundation to an increasingly fragmented upper edge as these long angles reach to the sky.

The Temple is a collaborative effort of three long-time community artists; Rebecca Anders, Jess Hobbs, and Peter Kimelman; along with numerous Burning Man communities and friends.

We have a huge range of experience and backgrounds, with one unifying vision: creating awe-inspiring, memorable art that emerges from the community and influences change.

On May 18, the Rolling Stones’ 1972 classic Rolling Stones Exile on Main Street will be re-released in three editions: the remastered album, a version with bonus tracks and a superdeluxe set with vinyl, DVD and booklet (rumors of a super-duper-deluxe set complete with hypodermic and burnt spoon remain unconfirmed). The DVD is a super-cool behind-the-scenes during the making of “Exile on Main Street” in the early 1970′s. A must see for rock music fans and Stones fans.

Time has justified Exile’s mythological standing as a masterpiece of murk, an ??ber-bluesy collection of spooky grooves. Fans know of (and have mythologized) the band’s infamous sessions at Nellc??te in the south of France . And while it’s true that most of the album’s basic tracks were recorded there, where the Stones had been taxed into self-exile, Exile was actually wrapped and mixed right here in Los Angeles .

After the French heat got hip to Nellcote’s pharmaceutical follies, the Stones fled and arrived in L.A. on November 29, 1971. ” L.A. added a whole dimension to Exile’s mixing and assembly,” recalls Marshall Chess, who, as president of Rolling Stones Records, was privy to the inside. “The sunlight, the drive to work, the way the girls look. L.A.’s got a very strong set.”

Chess says Mick Jagger was in charge of sessions at Sunset Sound Recorders, still open for business today at the same spot: 6650 Sunset Boulevard, at Cherokee. “We utilized Dr. John and Billy Preston for help. Dr. John got us backup singers. Billy brought that gospel sound to the vocals. They were crucial to the overall sound of the tracks. In some ways they might’ve been called part-writers. A lot of times it’d be stagnant and Billy Preston would put his shit on it and it would change the riff and texture.” Chess remembers “Happy,” “Casino Boogie,” “Ventilator Blues,” “Torn and Frayed” and “Loving Cup” getting extensive overhauls at Sunset Sound.

Former Beatles employee Chris O’Dell was personal assistant to the Stones at the time: “Keith [Richards] was going through his usual Keith stuff. They weren’t organized in the studio. I remember many nights being there for hours. It felt like it didn’t ever click. Maybe that’s the way they recorded. I was used to the Beatles and how refined their sessions were.”

O’Dell leased homes for Jagger, Richards and Mick Taylor in Bel Air, while Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts usually stayed at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. “They were the toast of the town. They got invited to everything that happened,” O’Dell recalls. “Mick’s a very social person. Always has been.” The boys partied with Papa John Phillips and Natalie Wood and visited Ike and Tina Turner’s studio in Inglewood.

O’Dell’s then-boyfriend, former Band road manager and Mean Streets producer Jonathan Taplin, recommended photographer Robert Frank for the album cover and sent Jagger a copy of Frank’s heralded photo collection The Americans. Frank was flown in from New York and they all went down to L.A. ‘s Skid Row on pregentrified Main Street to shoot ??? hence the album’s title.

“I just remember how easygoing it was, just walking down the street and people following us and everybody getting high,” says O’Dell. “The street people came out and went, ‘Heeeyyy, are you Mick fucking Jagger?’ He’d laugh and they’d follow us.” Frank used a Super-8 movie camera and the Stones stills on Exile’s cover are frames from that film.

Chess says 1 a.m. business meetings with lawyers were not uncommon, and fondly recounts regular jaunts with Keith to Canter’s on Fairfax for strawberry shortcake with real whipped cream. Both he and Keith bought Ferrari Dinos at Hollywood Sports Cars, a legendary dealership that’s no longer in business. But there was a dark side too.
“After Altamont there were death threats from the Hell’s Angels,” says Chess. “When we got to L.A. , Mick and I bought pistols. I had a .38 hammerless Smith & Wesson. Mick was paranoid about the Angels.” But overall, Chess says, L.A. was a positive experience that put the icing on one of the great rock & roll albums of all time. “They were drawn to all things American. The Stones love American music and fit really well in L.A. ”

Bringing it all back to 2010, it’s the jones for new music on the bonus tracks that has Stones freaks scratching. Don Was, the Stones’ producer since 1993, was brought in last year to mix and oversee overdubs for unfinished outtakes. He recounts his marching orders: “Keith sent me a fax sayin’, ‘You don’t have to make it sound like Exile. It is Exile.’”

Was explains what he believes to be the key to Exile’s off-kilter sound: “It reminded me of what Miles [ Davis ] was doin’. There’s this apparent looseness to it, but it’s holdin’ together. The thing that makes [the Stones] great is that they all feel the beat in a little different place. If you listen to the tracks individually, you go, ‘This is a mess.’ When you put it all together, it creates this looseness, but it still grooves. There’s a centrifugal force that holds the band together. With Exile, they pushed the centrifugal force as far out as you can and still have the center hold.”

Jimmy magickally kept me connected to the guitar, even through the years that my own guitars sat alone, seemingly forgotten… though I must say that lately they have been getting quite a bit of play. I’ve been intently learning some new tunage (check out Vanderbilly.com), the latest of which are “The Rain Song” and “Bron-yr-Aur”. Both of which are beautiful guitar ditties any guitarist would joy to diddle with!

It was also Jimmy Page that clued me into the Law of Thelema when I as a teenager. Long Live the Great Beast Aleister! For these things and more, I am grateful that Mr. Page was born.

MARK LEWIS
Mark Lewis, one of the most revered and respected DJs in the nation, has been a leading figure in the dance music industry and has earned an unchallenged reputation for producing successful worldwide DJ sets for 20 years.

Mark, a London native, began his career in L.A. in 1988. In addition to being one of the pioneers of the West Coast Underground House Scene, He is credited for founding the legendary ???Logic??? party at the West End in Los Angeles CA in the mid 90s. Mark has shared the turntables with the most renowned Global DJs. In addition to being a DJ who has spun throughout Europe, Asia, North and South America and South Africa, he has earned an unchallenged reputation for producing successful DJ sets worldwide. Mark’s intercontinental popularity has him rocking the crowds from the infamous Nikki Beach, Giant, Avalon and Cream to Ministry of Sound in England and more. His uplifting music style of cutting edge tribal house infused with progressive riffs has kept him in demand around the globe. Music legends like Carl Cox and Paul Oakenfold have requested Mark to go on numerous U.S. and European tours. Elton John himself often requests the DJ to provide his Foundation parties with the Mark Lewis touch. In the summer of 2000, Mark Lewis launched Mixology, Inc., a multifaceted company home to a record label, events and a marketing division that offers lifestyle options for DJs and DJ connoisseurs. A coveted residency at Hollywood???s hot-spot-to-be-and-to- be-seen, Ecco starts in 2010 and his online video show called DJ Diaries.

MICHAEL COOK
Michael Cook is a native of Manchester, England currently residing in London. He began DJing professionally at the age of 18 playing a heady mixture of Indy and early Hip Hop & Electro in the North West of England before leaving for the USA in 1986. He’s been one of the Djs credited with bringing Acid House to California but prefers to believe he (along with several other DJs) helped bring California to Acid House. Based in Los Angeles California, Michael became one of the founding fathers of the West Coast Underground House & Rave Scene, playing at such legendary vanguard parties as Alices House, Moonshine, Double Hit Mickey, Truth, Paw Paw Patch, Narnia & Gilligans Island. In addition, he hosted Los Angeles first underground dance radio show on KXLU with Jason Bentley.

Michael sites John Peel as his first and most formative musical influence and Michael???s musical tastes remain resolutely eclectic. Michael is the consummate all rounder drawing his set selections from the entire spectrum including Funk, Soul, Reggae, Jazz, Latin, Down tempo, Deep House, Nu Disco, Hip Hop, Electro, Punk Funk, Broken Beat, Rock and Indy; though he is equally happy specializing in any one of these genres.

Currently he resides and plays various residencies in some of Londons top clubs bars and lounges and regularly plays guest sets at home and internationally. DOC MARTIN
If there was a house DJ in America who could accurately claim to be the most important house DJ working today, it would be Doc Martin. But then, Doc would never accept such a title even if it happens to be true, because Doc is not only a legendary talent but a legendarily humble man.

Doc Martin???s live sets truly bring people together the variation in his style of music is endless. What makes him so different from the rest? A unique ability to spin everything from deep house vocals that have much depth and meaning to us all in some way, his funky tribal Bass lines mixed with threads of acid, his passive collection of classics rare records that are only to be heard at his gigs.

Doc Martin has developed the respect, as a house DJ that so many of us admire it is this respect that keeps him constantly touring, from New York to London, Japan and everywhere in between. JOHN WANDER
Born and raised in Los Angeles, John was exposed to electronic music by good friend, Bobby Dvoran (aka Bobby D) in the early 90???s at legendary LA events such as Flammable Liquid, Truth, Doc Martin???s ???Unlock the House???, Sunday Love, Brownies Dj sets at ???Monarch???, Nectar, Jason Bentley???s ???Bossa Nova???, Marques Wyatt???s ???High Society???, Mark Lewis ???Logic??? at West End, and several others. John sites Michael Cook, Laurent Garnier and the others listed above as his first electronic music influences and the inspiration to start Djing in 1996. A true lover of music for all of his life, John???s music tastes are extremely eclectic and reflect a wide range that include Deep House, Twisted Funk, Techno, Tech House, Indie, Nu Disco, Down tempo, Hip Hop, Jazz, Electro, Rock, Soul, and Latin. John???s early Dj residencies were at the legendary ???Insomnia??? afterhours and Spundae LA.

In 2000, John along with good friends founded the infamous ???Roam Music??? events in LA. Roam Music is known for introducing breakout artists to the West Coast such as Damian Lazarus, Audio Soul Project (Mazi), Asad Rizvi, Tania Vulcano, and several other Spanish artists. They have produced events in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, and Spain. Roam Music is partly credited for bringing Techno back to LA. Roam Music has hosted many break out artists and has given John the opportunity to DJ with various friends/artists such as Phonique, Michael Cook, Doc Martin, M.A.N.D.Y, Jamie Jones, Seth Troxler, Mathew Jonson, Damian Lazarus, Dyed Soundorom, David Duriez, Kate Simko, Three, Marco Carola, and many others in national and international venues through out Spain, Berlin, Montreal, Hong Kong, New York, London, Miami, San Francisco. John is currently working in the studio with friend Rob G and engineer Casey Nefcy on a remix to be completed in January 2010. Currently in stealth mode, John will be launching a record label in 2010.

DROOG
A quintessential LA story: three people (Andrei Osyka, Brett Griffin, Justin Sloe) make a westward pilgrimage at the turn of the millennium, all from different places and backgrounds, unknown to each other but connected by love of dance music and the search for fresh and exciting territory. A friendship, formed after chance meetings in the Los Angeles dance music scene, evolved into a full- fledged musical partnership.

From the first gig together in 2005, through countless hours spent crafting a common creative identity, Droog was formed. Droog???s individual musical origins and taste combined under the common denominator of the collective – Justin???s love of old school hip-hop and house, and his proficiency with a down-tempo style; Brett???s affection for classic New Wave and fresh indie rock, Andrei???s beginnings in deep and disco house of the late 90???s.

Droog honed their skills alongside such luminaries of the scene as Richie Hawtin, Damian Lazarus, Tiefschwarz, M.A.N.D.Y., Locodice, Josh Wink, Booka Shade and others. Droog???s opening and closing sets, as well as burgeoning relationships with the strongest global talent, have helped cement Avalon???s reputation as the venue of choice for cutting edge dance music in Los Angeles. A natural extension of the Avalon experience for Droog was the desire to throw their own events, which have showcased forward-thinking music from the world over. Droog have delivered the underground to the heart of Hollywood with a series of nighttime soirees and have gotten international attention with a host of parties on the rooftop of the modern Standard Hotel. In two years of events, the collective played with and showcased rising global stars and established creative forces from Magda, Jamie Jones and Seth Troxler to LoSoul, Konrad Black and Ewan Pearson. At the same time, Droog have expanded their reach by DJing throughout the United States.

Sharing the controls with the artists they respect and admire most, building a scene around their parties, DJing on the road, and combining sensibilities of three personalities have all contributed to Droog developing their own distinct sound. Droog???s sets fuse the classic U.S. house and techno traditions with the best in European underground dance music, from deep house to minimal.

2009 has been a banner year for the lads. At this year???s WMC, Droog launched their nascent label, Culprit. After a barnstorming showcase at DEMF, Culprit released its first EP by Hot Natured (Jamie Jones & Lee Foss) in June. The slate of new releases planned on the label will include Droog???s debut original and remix material.

The Droog collective now stands poised to solidify and expand this reputation, at the forefront of the LA dance music resurgence.

OK, so these folks created an opera.?? About Burning Man.?? Yeah, that’s what we said too when they first brought us the idea: “What?… there’s no WAY you can hope to pull this off, describing the indescribable … in an OPERA of all things. Please.”

Well, we sent out our most cynical, jaded scouts to watch the show when it premiered.?? And, well, we were astounded when those highly cynical, hard-to-please emissaries were completely blown away by what they saw.

This show??? Is awesome.?? Funny, intelligent, poignant, thoughtful, and thoroughly representative of our little shindig in the desert.?? OK, so lucky for you, they’re taking it on the road.?? And not only that, but you can get involved, too!

In January, San Francisco???s Stage Werx Theater hosted a sold-out run (6 shows in 4 nights) of “How to Survive the Apocalypse: A Burning Opera.”

Though we were presenting a humble workshop performance with no budget, the event was wildly successful, with Burning Man virgins and grizzled old timers registering great enthusiasm.

[The show] is both engrossing musical theater in its own right and a piece of art that truly captures the feel of the [Burning Man] event and the Zeitgeist of its attendees.

West Coast Tour Planned

Now we are planning a Fall Tour of the West Coast in September and October, with a more ambitious national roadshow on the horizon of 2010, featuring east coast venues. To get more information about the show and our mission, check out the Burning Opera website.

Currently, we are in negotiations with Teatro Zinzanni to use their gorgeous and historic Spiegeltents in San Francisco and Seattle as anchors for our fall tour. Because we would play the Zinzanni tents on Monday through Wednesday, the weekends would remain open, allowing us to present the show at other West Coast locations.

The current plan is to begin some rehearsals and design in the Bay Area in late August, and to have a small presence in Black Rock City, where we will shoot some video and connect with new performers and collaborators. The main block of rehearsals would begin after Burning Man in San Francisco, where the show would open on Sept 22 & 23. We are currently looking for an appropriate venue between SF and Seattle for the weekend of 9/25 & 26. The show would then run at Zinzanni in Seattle 9/29 & 30. We hopefully will find another ‘midway’ venue 10/2&3, and then close our run in SF 10/5,6& 7. Finally, we aim to travel to L.A. 10/9 & 10. Are you on the East coast? We want to talk to YOU!

We’re assembling the production staff to begin working on this tour NOW. During the next month, we will be holding auditions and meetings with interested collaborators (either to join the tour or to help us bring it to your city) in the following places:

• NYC – Sunday April 5th
  • auditions by appointment in the afternoon;
  • meet & greet/cocktails 5-7pm; location TBA

• Washington DC – Wednesday April 8th
  • meet & greet/cocktails evening; exact time and location TBA

We’re looking for volunteers in the NYC, DC, and Virginia area to help run these events, as well as to host fund raising events throughout the summer.

To take this project to the next level, we need to create a strong core Production Team ASAP. We’re looking to fill key roles within the next few weeks. We have had a great response from our production meetings in SF Los Angeles. Now we’d like to round out the cast and staff positions with participants from the other coast, in true Burner fashion. As this is a Burning Man-style show, the stars will help with the setup and the roadies will be onstage. We love double, triple, and quadruple threats. We especially love riveting singers and dancers that can also play a marching band instrument and have a great attitude while working hard behind the scenes???or perhaps a professional gaffer who really loves to sing!??
