LIB had been constantly updating their Twitter feed, letting you know who was currently on what stage, and other up-to-the-minute happenings throughout the weekend event. Very useful indeed.

Hello Again,

Just returned from a short and sweet (maybe even a tad bitter-sweet) Playa adventure, my 10 year BRC anniversary. Black Rock City never ceases to blow my mind every year, without fail. I find myself uttering those words out loud each year, whether alone or with friends. It felt as though I had come full circle, having done a lot of things this year that I had never done before. Over the years, I’ve camped all around our crazy city: from the Esplanade, to a few streets back, and all the way on the deepest road, north, south, and center. I’ve never been on the Playa for under 2 weeks, and once for almost a month in 1998. This time, it was for only 5 short nights Thursday thru Monday. It was strange, interesting and fun, yet slightly melancholic…

It was my 10th consecutive sojourn and perhaps my final. I never say never, but I’ve been talking with some long-time Burner friends about replacing that span of time and that amount of money and pooling our resources to go somewhere in the south Pacific, or Bali, or Fiji, or fill-in-the-blank… for a month or six weeks instead of the Playa. Though, as you know, it is very difficult to say “no” to the Playa… Maybe the better choice would be to go to the Playa AND visit far flung countries around the planet. We’ll see if this new idea has legs….

I’ve more to say about Burning Man this year, and I intend to post some thoughts and ideas on my blog where hopefully a discussion can unfold. As my friend and hero Bill Hicks used to say prior to his death in 1994: “Folks…. It’s time to evolve some ideas….”

Fire Disaster Relief Fundraiser

Fires scorched over 90,000 acres in our neighborhood last month. 100% of profits from the festival will be donated locally for fire disaster relief. Hundreds of homes lost; millions were spent fighting the Sawtooth Millard Fires. Come out to the high desert to enjoy a beautiful weekend of music. ** SEPTEMBER LASERIUM SHOWS CONTINUE IN VAN NUYS **

Continuing its current run, the Van Nuys Cyberstudio of Laser Images, Inc. will present Laserium Shows on Saturdays in September.

Featuring the classic Laserium Shows of Pink Floyd???s Dark Side of the Moon, Led Zeppelin and The Beatles, as seen at CSUN and Griffith Observatory, the shows will also introduce the interactive technologies to be incorporated in the forthcoming Laserium Cyberdome.

Enhancing the Laserium shows will be stunning multi-color laser effects filling the air overhead and awesome stereo sound; while in an adjacent studio patrons will experience the unique, interactive LightDancer which puts them in control of lasers, video and even musical accompaniment.

Says Ivan Dryer, creator of Laserium, ???Our Cyberstudio may be intimate, but the effects are pretty overwhelming, and what people can see and do is unlike anything available anywhere???even previously at the Observatory!???

** COSMIC NEWS: HUGE MOON RISING TONIGHT **

Astronomers at the International Astronomical Union’s General Assembly in Prague decided that the Solar System has eight planets, and Pluto is not one of them. BIG FULL MOON: Tonight’s full moon is the closest and biggest of 2006. Why? The Moon’s orbit is lopsided: one side is closer to Earth than the other. When the Moon turns full on Sept 7th, it will be on the close side, making it seem a bit wider than usual. Look for the extra-wide Moon rising in the east at sunset–very pretty.

BONUS–A LUNAR ECLIPSE: If you live in eastern Europe, Asia, Africa or Australia, you might also see a partial lunar eclipse tonight. The Moon will dip into Earth’s shadow for about 90 minutes around 1851 UT on Sept. 7th. Only 19% of the Moon will be covered, but that’s enough for a nice display. A SPOT OF FOLKLORE: September’s full Moon is usually called the Harvest Moon, but not this year. By definition, the Harvest Moon is the full Moon closest to the autumnal equinox. This year’s equinox falls on Sept. 23rd and the full Moon closest to that comes on October 7th. The 2006 Harvest Moon will have to wait until October.

Initiated by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and administered by Creative Capital, The Creative Capital | Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant is a three-year pilot program designed to support critical writing on contemporary visual art through project-based grants issued directly to individual authors. The first program of its type, it was founded in recognition of both the financially precarious situation of arts writers and their indispensable contribution to a vital artistic culture. Through awards for books, articles, and work in new and alternative media, The Creative Capital | Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant aims to honor and encourage:
??? Writing about art that is rigorous, passionate, eloquent, and precise
??? Writing about art in which a keen engagement with the present is infused with an appreciation of the historical
??? Writing about art that is neither afraid to take a stand, nor content to deliver authoritative pronouncements, but seeks rather to pose questions and generate new possibilities for thinking, seeing, and making

Initiated by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and administered by Creative Capital, The Creative Capital | Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant is a three-year pilot program designed to support critical writing on contemporary visual art through project-based grants issued directly to individual authors.

The first program of its type, it was founded in recognition of both the financially precarious situation of arts writers and their indispensable contribution to a vital artistic culture. Through awards for books, articles, and work in new and alternative media, The Creative Capital | Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant aims to honor and encourage:

??? Writing about art that is rigorous, passionate, eloquent, and precise

??? Writing about art in which a keen engagement with the present is infused with an appreciation of the historical

??? Writing about art that is neither afraid to take a stand, nor content to deliver authoritative pronouncements, but seeks rather to pose questions and generate new possibilities for thinking, seeing, and making

What is a planet? For years, astronomers have been debating that question, with the status of tiny Pluto hanging in the balance. Finally, an answer is in the offing. Today, the International Astronomical Union’s Planet Definition Committee announced their proposal for a new, official definition of “planet.” If the proposal is approved by a vote of IAU astronomers on August 24th, the number of planets in the Solar System would swell from nine to twelve. Hey everybody,

Sorry for the mass email but I wanted to share the latest from low-fi filmworks. “Chutzpah this is?” is now a featured film on myspace. I think they’ve posted the entire film online. So if you haven’t seen it yet, turn on your DSL kick up your heels and check it out. For those who haven’t seen it yet “Chutzpah” is a mockumentary chronicling the struggles of the worlds first Jewish Hip-Hop Supergroup. It features George Segal, Gary Oldman, Debbie Mazar, and some really great music and performances from Tor Hyams, Jerran Friedman and David Scharf aka Chutzpah. It was written and directed by yours truly and produced by the lovely Mimi Kent. It’s had great showings at the HBO Aspen Comedy Fest and many other festivals.

Laserium Shows will be presented in the Van Nuys Cyberstudio of Laser Images, Inc. at 6:00, 8:00 and 10:00 on Saturdays throughout August.

Punching up the Laserium shows will be stunning multi-color laser effects and awesome stereo sound; while in an adjacent studio, patrons will experience the unique, exciting LightDancer which puts them in control of lasers, video and even musical accompaniment. Says Ivan Dryer, creator of Laserium, ???Our Cyberstudio may be intimate, but the effects are pretty overwhelming, and what people can see and do is unlike anything available anywhere???even previously at the Observatory!??? Seating is limited and shows sell out quickly, so patrons are advised to make early reservations noting the number in their party and desired show time. There is a discount for groups of 5 or more, and private parties can be arranged.
According to Dryer, the Cyberstudio is the precursor to the all-new Laserium Cyberdome, whose location and opening date will be announced soon.

We’re delighted to report that Creative Capital’s distinct approach to working with artists was recognized this week in an Associated Press article appearing in the Chicago Tribune. The article has also appeared in the LA Times, U.S. News and World Report, Yahoo! Finance, and Forbes.com, among others.

Excerpt from “Groups help artists sketch out their financial futures”:

Philanthropic and for-profit organizations offer education, health care, steady income by Dave Carpenter:

Mostly self-employed or relying on part-time teaching jobs, many artists tend to have shaky finances and scant prospects for improving them aside from going into another profession. But some institutions have sprung up to try to help–and ideally thrive financially at the same time. . . .

The New York-based non-profit [Creative Capital] has not only given out more than $6 million to 242 artists–an average of $25,000 to $35,000 per project–but it has trained more than 1,000 artists in career planning, money and time management.

“There’s a lot of mythology around this stuff for artists,” Ruby Lerner, the group’s founding CEO and president, said of the financial aspect. “A lot of what happens in art school is that people aren’t prepared for this. They think, `If I’m really good, things will just come to me.’”

Hello Again,

I’m happy to announce the unveiling of the new blog site for TwansList. Over the years, people have mentioned that it might be a good idea to have a web based home for the list. It took a while, but now that I’m stepping out of the role of L.A.’s Burning Man regional point man, I have more time to do other things. Hence the creation of the TwansList blog. Which is just one of a number of projects I’m working on currently.

I’m still in the process of figuring out how to set it up in the most effective, aesthetically appealing way, and so please bare with me as I attempt to finesse it to perfection. The thing I love about perfection is that it is rarely achieved…. which is a good thing. There’s always something more to do in the quest for perfection. I’m putting it out to the world now as I’m anxious to get up and running.

Laserium Shows will be presented in the Van Nuys Cyberstudio of Laser Images, Inc. at 6:00, 8:00 and 10:00 on Saturdays throughout August.

Featuring the classic Laserium Shows of Pink Floyd???s Dark Side of the Moon, Led Zeppelin and The Beatles, as seen at CSUN and Griffith Observatory, the shows will also introduce the interactive technologies to be incorporated at the forthcoming Laserium Cyberdome.

Punching up the Laserium shows will be stunning multi-color laser effects and awesome stereo sound; while in an adjacent studio, patrons will experience the unique, exciting LightDancer which puts them in control of lasers, video and even musical accompaniment. Says Ivan Dryer, creator of Laserium, ???Our Cyberstudio may be intimate, but the effects are pretty overwhelming, and what people can see and do is unlike anything available anywhere???even previously at the Observatory!??? Seating is limited and shows sell out quickly, so patrons are advised to make early reservations noting the number in their party and desired show time.

There is a discount for groups of 5 or more, and private parties can be arranged.

According to Dryer, the Cyberstudio is the precursor to the all-new Laserium Cyberdome, whose location and opening date will be announced soon.

have been hooping I have developed a concise and poignant teaching style that allows my

Our creative drive and insight is united by a burning commitment to manifest high quality, uncompromised expressions of Art. Disciplines include but are not limited to: film/video, fashion, music, performance art/dance, graphic arts/design, industrial arts/architecture, painting, sculpture, and photography.

Playaground???s resident and contributing artists preside over the 14,000sf top-floor of a massive brick building, where exposed brick walls, high ceilings and rooftop cityscape views are but a few of the space???s rarities.

To be shared by all are cross-discipline group work spaces (workshop, fashion, photography and music studios), an office/conference room, gallery space, a common kitchen, and the Skull & Rose Lounge. Studio and project space is available immediately in addition as well as live/work lofts. Playaground???s layout has been designed conducive to collaboration with a modular aspect for organic growth & change.

With so much space to play with and visions at hand, Playaground is in need of volunteers to assist with general tasks, cleaning, and picking up Craig???s List scores around town (i.e. furniture, electronics, etc.).

** CORRECTION RE: EARTHQUAKE SAFETY MESSAGE IN PREV. POST **

(Many thanx to the 3 sleuths within our tribe who correted me about the earthquake safety ???triangle of life??? posting I sent out in my last posting to this list. Apologies for not having caught this before sending. Here is an update??? ???Twan)

There???s a lot of false information in there and the writer is under investigation for fraud.

Origins: We can???t say that every single point mentioned in the above article about earthquake safety by controversial ???rescue expert??? Doug Copp is wrong or bad advice, but there are some pretty substantial reasons why readers might want to take the article (particularly its advice that everyone who uses the ???duck and cover??? technique in an earthquake ends up crushed to death) with some very large grains of salt:

Disaster preparedness experts with the American Red Cross dispute that findings based on earthquake experiences in other countries (e.g., Turkey) are applicable to the U.S., where building codes are substantially different.

The scientific validity of the conclusions expressed in the article has been questioned by others.

Doug Copp???s claim that he performed rescue work at the World Trade Center (for which he was paid $650,000 in compensation for injuries he supposedly sustained there) has been challenged in a series of articles published in the Albuquerque Journal which describe him as a self-serving opportunist rather than a true rescue expert:

Self-proclaimed rescue guru Doug Copp???s mission to ground zero was considered so important that he had clearance to be flown to New York even though all civilian air traffic in the United States had been grounded. Once there, he says he assumed a pivotal role and sustained devastating injuries while wading through the ???toxic soup??? in search of survivors and victims, and was awarded nearly $650,000 for his injuries. But there is little evidence Copp performed real rescue work, and it is doubtful that he deserves compensation.

Doug Copp was awarded $649,000, tax free, from the fund set up to compensate victims of 9/11. He says it???s not enough. But it???s doubtful he deserves anything. A Journal investigation found little evidence that Copp did real rescue work in New York. His forays into the rubble were to shoot video, some of which he tried to sell. His claim of seeking medical care within the time frame appears false. All typical of Copp???s years as a self-proclaimed rescue guru. Other articles have relayed complaints from numerous people who have dealt with Mr. Copp.

Mr. Copp is under investigation by a U.S. Department of Justice fraud unit. We???d recommend sticking with safety information prepared by established earthquake safety experts, such as the American Red Cross and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

This year the Venice Carnevale is shaping up bigger, stronger and better than ever. The Venice Carnevale committee has fought a huge battle with the city, police and neighbors so that we can have this event for the fifth year, and now they’ve generously offered our community a burning man and DJ area. The organizing committee is giving us a wonderful space for our dear community, for the second year. They are giving us a huge city block where we can play, dress up, set up our theme camps and play music in an artistic evironment by the sea!

This is a FREE event on October 28th and goes from noon to 10 pm, (with an after party) in Venice, CA, in the tradition of Venice Italy’s masked Carnevale. I know that you guys are all thinking about Black Rock City right now, but I’d like you guys to keep this in mind and plan on participating. We need you so this event is a success once again.
