[Twan’s List] V002:Issue001

Hello Again,

Just returned from a short and sweet (maybe even a tad bitter-sweet) Playa adventure, my 10 year BRC anniversary. Black Rock City never ceases to blow my mind every year, without fail. I find myself uttering those words out loud each year, whether alone or with friends. It felt as though I had come full circle, having done a lot of things this year that I had never done before. Over the years, I’ve camped all around our crazy city: from the Esplanade, to a few streets back, and all the way on the deepest road, north, south, and center. I’ve never been on the Playa for under 2 weeks, and once for almost a month in 1998. This time, it was for only 5 short nights Thursday thru Monday. It was strange, interesting and fun, yet slightly melancholic…

It was my 10th consecutive sojourn and perhaps my final. I never say never, but I’ve been talking with some long-time Burner friends about replacing that span of time and that amount of money and pooling our resources to go somewhere in the south Pacific, or Bali, or Fiji, or fill-in-the-blank… for a month or six weeks instead of the Playa. Though, as you know, it is very difficult to say “no” to the Playa… Maybe the better choice would be to go to the Playa AND visit far flung countries around the planet. We’ll see if this new idea has legs….

I’ve more to say about Burning Man this year, and I intend to post some thoughts and ideas on my blog where hopefully a discussion can unfold. As my friend and hero Bill Hicks used to say prior to his death in 1994: “Folks…. It’s time to evolve some ideas….”

** SAT. SEPT. 9: “DROPPING KNOWLEDGE” WEBCAST **

A global conversation in 8 Themes

On September 9, 2006, 112 of the world’s great minds will come together around the world’s largest table in Berlin’s historic Bebelplatz square. Recorded by 112 digital cameras, they will simultaneously answer 100 questions, chosen from thousands donated by the global public. The resulting 600+ hours of audiovisual content will launch an online resource: a knowledge portal and dialog forum created to host a global conversation covering the most pressing questions of our time.

Challenging, incendiary, poetic and profound, the 100 questions to be asked on September 9 engage the key social topics of our age. Today, Dropping Knowledge provides an exclusive preview of the questions by announcing the 8 themes around which the global dialog will be launched. They are:

Reinventing Economics
Questions about poverty, prosperity and expanding opportunity.

Conscious Recognition
Questions about ethics and responsibility.

Politics of Violence
Questions about peace, conflict and casualties of war.

Understanding Power
Questions about freedom and governance.

The Human Footprint
Questions about energy, ecology and sustainable ways of life.

The New Global Frontier
Questions about culture, communication and interconnection.

Innovation Acceleration
Questions about science, technology and the future.

A Perceiving Eye
Questions about your view.

To see a live-stream of the Table of Free Voices, or to give your own answers to the 100 questions, drop by http://www.droppingknowledge.org on 09. September 2006.

** SEPTEMBER LASERIUM SHOWS CONTINUE IN VAN NUYS **

Continuing its current run, the Van Nuys Cyberstudio of Laser Images, Inc. will present Laserium Shows on Saturdays in September.

Complete information is at www.laserium.com and at 818 997-3624.

Reservations for shows at 6:00, 8:00 and 10:00 on Saturday September 16, September 23, and September 30 are now being accepted at laserium@earthlink.net or 818 997-6611.

Admission is $15 at the door, and there is a discount for groups of 5 or more.

Featuring the classic Laserium Shows of Pink Floyd???s Dark Side of the Moon, Led Zeppelin and The Beatles, as seen at CSUN and Griffith Observatory, the shows will also introduce the interactive technologies to be incorporated in the forthcoming Laserium Cyberdome.

Enhancing the Laserium shows will be stunning multi-color laser effects filling the air overhead and awesome stereo sound; while in an adjacent studio patrons will experience the unique, interactive LightDancer which puts them in control of lasers, video and even musical accompaniment.

Says Ivan Dryer, creator of Laserium, ???Our Cyberstudio may be intimate, but the effects are pretty overwhelming, and what people can see and do is unlike anything available anywhere???even previously at the Observatory!???

Because seating is limited, patrons are advised to make early reservations noting the number in their party and desired show time.
According to Dryer, the Cyberstudio is the precursor to the all-new Laserium Cyberdome, whose location and opening date will be announced soon.

** COSMIC NEWS: HUGE MOON RISING TONIGHT **

Astronomers at the International Astronomical Union’s General Assembly in Prague decided that the Solar System has eight planets, and Pluto is not one of them. Pluto has been declared a “dwarf planet.” Joining Pluto in the dwarf planet category are giant asteroid Ceres and Pluto’s cousin 2003 UB313. Get the full story at http://spaceweather.com .

PLUTO PETITION: Got an opinion about Pluto? Sign the Pluto Petition: http://plutopetition.com

BIG FULL MOON: Tonight’s full moon is the closest and biggest of 2006. Why? The Moon’s orbit is lopsided: one side is closer to Earth than the other. When the Moon turns full on Sept 7th, it will be on the close side, making it seem a bit wider than usual. Look for the extra-wide Moon rising in the east at sunset–very pretty.

BONUS–A LUNAR ECLIPSE: If you live in eastern Europe, Asia, Africa or Australia, you might also see a partial lunar eclipse tonight. The Moon will dip into Earth’s shadow for about 90 minutes around 1851 UT on Sept. 7th. Only 19% of the Moon will be covered, but that’s enough for a nice display. Maps and animations may be found at http://Spaceweather.com .

A SPOT OF FOLKLORE: September’s full Moon is usually called the Harvest Moon, but not this year. By definition, the Harvest Moon is the full Moon closest to the autumnal equinox. This year’s equinox falls on Sept. 23rd and the full Moon closest to that comes on October 7th. The 2006 Harvest Moon will have to wait until October.

Radio Station Frequencies at Burning Man

For those of us who are unfortunate enough NOT to be heading out to Black Rock City yet, here is a last second posting of some useful Playa information.

At Burning Man, we have the opportunity to listen to the best FM radio available anywhere. You’ve never heard radio like this before (unless, of course, you have!). Many years ago, there was one radio station at Burning Man, but that has grown over the years. Now there are dozens.

Before you get into your overstuffed vehicle to head out to the Playa, do yourself a favor and visit the following website, which lists most (if not all) of the radio stations and programming. Pirate radio has never been better! Print out a copy and bring it with you:

Have a great Burn!

Colorful Maps of Black Rock City 2006

Here are a couple maps of Black Rock City: Burning Man 2006:

Here’s a lively map that you can bring with you to the Playa This may be the actual map we get when we arrive to the Playa since she designed the printed maps in previous years:

Here is a BRC 2006 map that can be downloaded in PDF format from the Burning man website:

Over the years, this being my 10th consecutive Burn, I always have a couple copies of these maps with me. I have found them to come in quite handy, making notes of where all my friends are located all over the Playa. Carry one with you, and if you find yourself in some far flung corner of the city, far away from your home camp, pull out your handy map and see who happens to be near by.

Photos from the Playa: Pre-BRC Build 2006

Here are some photos from the build going on at the Playa for BRC 2006. Looks like they’re having lovely weather and some awesome sunsets.

Have a look at the photo gallery, pre-Playa 2006

Opportunity in Italy for Artists

This looks like a great experience for an adventurous traveling artist. Have a look at their website. This would be an amazing way to spend some time indulging in your particular mode of artistry.

ART WORKSHOPS IN ITALY

In our fifteenth year, The Abruzzi Mountain Workshop (Sep 27 – Oct 4) continues its innovative drawing/painting/mixed media program, IN VIAGGIO, on the intriguing island of ISCHIA. Situated in the Bay of Naples, it is known for its rich Greek origins, as well as its ancient thermal waters.

As in our other programs, we integrate the textures of Italy with mixed-media, collage & site specific work. We welcome both beginners and more experienced artists.

  • Mornings will be spent working from the hotel or in superb outdoor locations among cobbled streets, shaded piazzas and stunning Mediterranean promontories.
  • Afternoons will be available for island excursions and partaking of the lovely island spas.

The workshop will be conducted by Patricia Antonucci and Barbara Schaefer.
We are two New York based artists who have lived and worked extensively in Italy, joining our creative forces for a week of exciting and energizing approaches.

[Twan’s List] V1:Issue14

Hello,

A few things going down tonight, tomorrow and the weekend. An artists’ funding opportunity, a job offering for a qualified documentary director, and some odds and ends. Given the fact that it’s so close to Burning Man, things seem a little slow. That will change come the 2nd week in September or so.

Visit the Twan’s List blog for easier navigation of this list and archives of categorized past postings, as well as other info that isn’t featured in the email postings. Please feel free to post comments, share your thoughts and ideas, rants, raves, suggestions, critiques, whatever by clicking on the ‘comments’ link found immediately below each message. To leave comments, you will need to complete a very quick and simple registration. I encourage you to do so. Just click on the ‘comments’ link, and it will take you where you need to go. ** THE MEANING OF PLANET **

What is a planet? For years, astronomers have been debating that question, with the status of tiny Pluto hanging in the balance. Finally, an answer is in the offing. Today, the International Astronomical Union’s Planet Definition Committee announced their proposal for a new, official definition of “planet.” If the proposal is approved by a vote of IAU astronomers on August 24th, the number of planets in the Solar System would swell from nine to twelve. And, yes, Pluto would be among them.

** RICK & MIMI KENT’S “CHUTZPAH THIS IS” **

Hey everybody,

Sorry for the mass email but I wanted to share the latest from low-fi filmworks. “Chutzpah this is?” is now a featured film on myspace. I think they’ve posted the entire film online. So if you haven’t seen it yet, turn on your DSL kick up your heels and check it out. For those who haven’t seen it yet “Chutzpah” is a mockumentary chronicling the struggles of the worlds first Jewish Hip-Hop Supergroup. It features George Segal, Gary Oldman, Debbie Mazar, and some really great music and performances from Tor Hyams, Jerran Friedman and David Scharf aka Chutzpah. It was written and directed by yours truly and produced by the lovely Mimi Kent. It’s had great showings at the HBO Aspen Comedy Fest and many other festivals.

Let us know what you think and please forward the link on to friends.

Thanks to everyone for your continued support.

Best wishes,

Rick
